Zach Cregger is set to weave his enchantment with the prequel to Weapons, which will center around the standout character Gladys. During the Directors on Directing panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, the filmmaker provided an update on the anticipated feature that will follow his 2025 horror success, which earned Amy Madigan the Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Aunt Gladys.
According to Zach Cregger, “I’m genuinely thrilled about the Gladys movie, and collaborating with Amy was a fantastic experience,. I truly enjoyed that character. In the film Weapons, it was intentional not to explore her backstory, as the concept of Weapons was to maintain her enigmatic nature. Nonetheless, there’s a captivating narrative waiting to be unveiled about Gladys’s origins and her transformation into the character we recognize today. It’s filled with unexpected twists, mysteries, and wild elements, much like Weapons. I believe it’s going to be fantastic. The script is currently being developed, and we are approaching it with utmost seriousness, ensuring it progresses positively. So yes, it is indeed being written, to put it simply.”
Focusing on a group of children who vanish during the night, Weapons premiered in theaters last August under Warner Bros. and grossed $270 million worldwide. The cast featured Madigan alongside Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, and Benedict Wong.
During Thursday’s panel, Cregger presented the newest trailer and exclusive footage from his upcoming video game adaptation, Resident Evil, set to be released by Sony in September. He also mentioned that his next project will be The Flood, a sci-fi film he penned for New Line.
Joining the panel were Mayday directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who hinted at the advancements on the upcoming Star Trek film that they are both writing and directing.
As per Jonathan Goldstein, “The characters will be different from those you’ve encountered before. This story will take place a bit further into the future than what you’ve experienced.”
