Tokyo Pop is a musical romantic comedy film from 1988, directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Lynn Grossman. The restored version of Tokyo Pop debuted at BAM Rose Cinemas in New York City on August 4, 2023, followed by a screening at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles on August 11, and a subsequent national rollout. Tokyo Pop is a Box Office failure at domestic Box Office.
The story centers on a young American singer, played by Carrie Hamilton, who journeys to Tokyo and encounters a local rock musician, Yutaka Tadokoro. Their meeting sparks both a romantic and musical bond, showcasing the contrast between American traditions and Tokyo’s vibrant lifestyle, all while unfolding a captivating love story between the two leads.
In reality, Tadokoro was the frontman of the 1980s rock band Red Warriors, who appear in the film as themselves. Tokyo Pop premiered in New York City on April 15, 1988, distributed by Spectrafilm, and later in Japan on November 5, 1988, by Shochiku-Fuji Company.
To celebrate its 35th anniversary, Tokyo Pop underwent a 4K restoration by IndieCollect in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive, funded by Carol Burnett, Dolly Parton, the HFPA Trust, and contributors to IndieCollect’s Jane Fonda Fund for Women Directors.
