The Boogeyman is a supernatural horror film from 2023, directed by Rob Savage and featuring a screenplay by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman. Based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story of the same name, the narrative centers around a family that becomes tormented by the Boogeyman after a troubled man visits and unintentionally brings the creature into their lives. The Boogeyman garnered mixed reviews from critics and achieved a worldwide gross of $82 million at Box Office.
The adaptation of King’s short story was initially announced in June 2018, with Beck and Woods set to write the screenplay. However, the project was shelved in 2019 following Disney’s acquisition of Fox. It was later revived in November 2021, with Savage taking the helm as director.
By early 2022, Thatcher, Messina, Dastmalchian, and the rest of the cast had signed on. Principal photography commenced in February 2022 in New Orleans.
Although it was originally intended for release on the streaming service Hulu, Walt Disney Studios ultimately decided on a theatrical release first, following favorable test screenings. The Boogeyman made it’s theatrical debut in the United States through 20th Century Studios on June 2, 2023.
