Terrifier is a 2016 independent slasher film from America, crafted by Damien Leone, who took on the roles of writer, editor, co-producer, and director. Terrifier made it’s debut at the Telluride Horror Show on October 15, 2016. It was then showcased at the Horror Channel Fright Fest on October 28, 2017, and later, Epic Pictures Releasing acquired it for a limited theatrical run on March 15 and 16, 2018. In April 2023, it was revealed that Terrifier would hit theaters again, this time in 853 locations on July 19, 2023. Terrifier is a successful movie at domestic Box Office.
The storyline follows partygoer Tara Heyes (Kanell) and her sister Victoria (Scaffidi) as they become prey to the mysterious serial killer known as Art the Clown (Thornton) on Halloween night. Leone originally developed the character of Art the Clown for his short film The 9th Circle (2008) and later created another short titled Terrifier (2011). These initial shorts sparked interest that led to the anthology film All Hallows’ Eve (2013), which included both segments.
With Terrifier, Leone aimed to highlight Art’s character and showcase his practical effects expertise. He has since voiced regret over the lack of depth given to the main characters. In an effort to fund the Terrifier feature film, Leone launched an Indiegogo campaign, which unfortunately did not meet it’s financial target.
Nevertheless, producer Phil Falcone stepped in to provide funding in exchange for a producer credit. Mike Giannelli, who had previously portrayed earlier versions of Art, retired from acting before filming commenced, leading to David Howard Thornton stepping in as Art.
Terrifier made it’s debut at the Telluride Horror Show on October 15, 2016, and was given a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 15, 2018, by Epic Pictures Releasing. The film garnered mixed reviews from critics, who praised the special effects and the performances of Kanell, Scaffidi, and Thornton, while the writing faced criticism.
Despite this, the film achieved cult status and eventually spawned a media franchise, including Terrifier 2, released on October 6, 2022, and Terrifier 3, set to release on October 11, 2024.
