Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Mutant Mayhem is a 2023 animated superhero comedy film from the United States, inspired by the beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. Directed by Jeff Rowe, who collaborated with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit on the screenplay, this film serves as a reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Mutant Mayhem proved to be a Box Office triumph, earning $180.5 million against a budget of $70 million.
The narrative centers on the Turtles’ quest for acceptance in the human world while confronting a criminal gang of mutants. The journey to create an animated Turtles film with Rogen began in 2018. The project was officially announced in June 2020, with Rogen, Goldberg, and James Weaver producing through their company, Point Grey Pictures, and Rowe taking the helm as director.
Aiming to delve into the teenage experiences of the Turtles, the filmmakers drew inspiration from classic coming-of-age films. The animation was crafted by Mikros Animation and Cinesite, drawing influence from notebook sketches.
Accompanying the film is a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, along with a selection of iconic East Coast hip-hop tracks. After a work-in-progress screening at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 12, 2023, Mutant Mayhem was released by Paramount Pictures in the United States on August 2.
Critics praised the film for it’s voice performances, screenplay, and unique animation style, with many deeming it the finest Turtles film to date. It has received nominations for Best Animated Feature at the 29th Critics’ Choice Awards, the 51st Annie Awards, and the 35th Producers Guild of America Awards.
