Michael Chaves, the director of The Conjuring – Last Rites, clarifies the absence of a cameo from Sister Irene of The Nun in the film’s conclusion. This newest installment in The Conjuring Universe showcases Ed and Lorraine Warren as they tackle yet another terrifying paranormal investigation.
The ensemble cast of Last Rites features Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Mia Tomlinson, Elliot Cowan, Rebecca Calder, and Ben Hardy. In the climactic scenes of Last Rites, Judy Warren ties the knot, and her heartfelt ceremony features appearances from Lili Taylor of The Conjuring, Frances O’Connor from The Conjuring 2, among others.
Yet, it is important to note that Taissa Farmiga, known for her role as Sister Irene in The Nun films, is conspicuously missing. Director Michael Chaves disclosed that conflicts in scheduling hindered a potential cameo by Farmiga.
He elaborated that Taissa and Vera have never shared the screen at the same time, and it was “heartbreaking for everyone” to lose out on that chance. The director mentioned that adding Taissa post-filming might have been another option.
According to Michael Chaves, “She had a strong desire to. I have been eagerly anticipating the moment when the Farmiga sisters share the screen. As far as I know, the only instance of them appearing together on screen is in Vera’s film Higher Ground, which is truly an excellent movie. Vera took on the role of director for this project. Although they don’t share any scenes together, [Taissa] portrays the younger version of Vera. I likely should have simply inserted her digitally, filming her against a blue screen and adding her in afterward, as that would have been effective.“
He further disclosed that Taissa’s appearance could potentially confuse viewers. He elaborated that Sister Irene might seem “too young” given that Last Rites takes place in the 1980s.
As per Michael Chaves, “I believe people would react by saying, ‘Hold on! She appears too youthful for the ’80s. If she was around in the ’50s, does that mean she doesn’t age? Is she a vampire?’ This could have puzzled them quite a bit.“
