In the Season 1 finale of Boston Blue, Sonequa Martin-Green’s character Lena faced a truly intense situation, and the actress is here to explain all the events that unfolded. The Star Trek veteran has co-starred in the Blue Bloods spinoff as Boston Police Detective Lena Silver, partnering with Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Regan after his move to the city.
In the first season, she has dealt with various issues, from her family’s prominent legacy in Boston to her absent father and her religious affiliations, notably converting to Judaism to pay tribute to her stepfather, Ben Silver, who was killed before the series commenced.
As the Season 1 finale of Boston Blue approached, Lena and Danny found themselves embroiled in a gripping investigation that took a dangerous turn, resulting in Lena being shot and severely injured, but she managed to survive against the odds.
Following her recovery, she was given the chance to meet her biological father, Chris. However, the season concluded with a shocking cliffhanger when her boyfriend, Brian, was intentionally T-boned by another vehicle, sending his car crashing into the nearby river.
To celebrate the airing of the finale, media channels had a conversation with Sonequa Martin-Green about the conclusion of Boston Blue Season 1.
When asked about the announcement of Season 2’s renewal by CBS, the actress revealed that she and her fellow cast members received a personal call from Donnie Wahlberg — who also serves as an executive producer for the Blue Bloods spinoff.
She commended him for being “such a leader,” “so generous,” “so giving,” and a “heart-forward kind of person.”
According to Sonequa Martin-Green, “He reached out to each of us with the goal of uniting us all. Naturally, he sought our consent before sharing it, but it truly reflects our essence. It offers a glimpse into our show family. It was also quite poetic, as I was filming that day while he wasn’t, and I found myself at the church, the very place where it all began. Our inaugural day of Season 1 featured a scene at the church, and we returned there to receive the news.”
In response to inquiries regarding a potential time jump from the Season 1 finale into Blue Bloods Season 2 after Brian’s cliffhanger crash, Martin-Green expressed, “I wish I knew” the starting point for the season.
However, she confirmed that the cast and creative team are enthusiastic about delving deeper into Brian’s character, as well as showcasing more of Erik King’s Chris, Alisha Wainwright’s Kristina, and Douglas Nyback’s Det.
As per Sonequa Martin-Green, “I truly enjoyed my time with everyone. I really hope we reconnect with them, and I’m eager to find out what happened to our beloved Brian, especially since someone attempted to harm him. It was surreal to witness that unfold while the family was sharing such a beautiful moment. It really tugged at my heartstrings, man, when I saw it.”

Sonequa Martin-Green reveals, “I believe the essence of grandpa’s response lies in his words, What’s one good cop among so many? He followed up with, ‘Who’s going to look out for these people?’ to which he affirmed, ‘I am. I am.’ This sentiment was deeply instilled in Mae, and subsequently in me, emphasizing that the difference you can make is all that truly matters, as it is the only difference you can create. This impact is immeasurable. While developing the relationship between Lena and Mae, and considering Mae’s influence alongside Sarah and Jonah, this concept resonated with me profoundly. Mae taught that quitting is not an option; there is always a victory to be found. If you haven’t achieved that victory yet, it simply means you haven’t searched deeply enough. In challenging moments, like Jonah experienced, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by what is beyond your control. However, Lena has discovered a remarkable balance between what she can control and what she cannot. She has matured significantly in her role as a police officer, detective, and public servant, gaining a clear understanding of this distinction. Early in her career, she mirrored Jonah’s passionate nature, but as time passed, her focus sharpened, allowing her to recognize precisely what actions she can take.”
