Snow White And The Huntsman Is Making A Remarkable Resurgence On Streaming Platforms

A long-lost fantasy element from the filmographies of Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron makes a comeback on the worldwide streaming charts. Snow White and The Huntsman made it’s theatrical debut in 2012, under the direction of Rupert Sanders (known for 2017’s Ghost in the Shell and 2024’s The Crow).

This same year saw the release of Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror, which offered a much more vibrant take on the Snow White story. Although it faced tough criticism, Snow White and the Huntsman managed to perform reasonably well at the Box Office, paving the way for it’s future success on streaming platforms.

As of March 6, Snow White and The Huntsman ranks as the 6th most popular movie globally on Disney+, according to FlixPatrol. However, this dark fantasy adventure is not accessible on Disney’s streaming platform in the U.S., where viewers can find it on VOD services like Prime Video.

Meanwhile, Predator – Badlands continues to lead the streaming charts for Disney+, but Snow White’s popularity remains consistent this week. Since March 3, Snow White and the Huntsman has been climbing into the top 10 rankings across various countries, currently achieving the highest viewership in Austria, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Monaco.

Despite holding a 48% rating on the Tomatometer, a 52% on the Popcornmeter, and a score of 2.6/5 on Letterboxd, the consensus appears to be that this film falls short of quality. However, it’s effort to deliver a gritty fantasy experience, combined with a star-studded cast, has still managed to attract audiences.

Alongside Hemsworth portraying “The Huntsman” and Theron as Ravenna, the Evil Queen, Snow White and the Huntsman features Kristen Stewart in the role of Snow White and Sam Claflin as William, the aspiring Prince Charming.

The cast also includes Sam Spruell, Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, and Toby Jones. Additionally, the film led to a sequel that introduced Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain to the ensemble.

Snow White and the Huntsman earned close to $400 million Box Office with a budget of $170 million, whereas The Huntsman – Winter’s War (2016) only made $165 million globally against a budget of $115 million, leading to a significant failure and the conclusion of the franchise.

Currently, Snow White and the Huntsman is also pertinent to Disney’s Snow White failure in 2025. Last year, Disney finally included Snow White in it’s lineup of live-action remakes. However, the film faced significant backlash over it’s casting choices and was ultimately deemed a poor production, earning a mere 39% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This resulted in a remarkable failure at the Box Office. The landscape of the movie theater industry has transformed considerably since 2012, yet even with the shortcomings of Snow White and the Huntsman, one cannot overlook the boldness of it’s artistic approach.

Mirror Mirror aimed to present a Snow White tale with a distinct visual approach compared to Disney’s version in 2012. Snow White and the Huntsman is a unique film that situates the narrative in a dark realm while striving to portray Snow White as a heroic revolutionary. Although the storyline may be disjointed, the action, cast, and visuals remain entertaining.
