Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a 2023 American superhero film inspired by the DC character Shazam. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, and the Safran Company, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it serves as the sequel to Shazam! (2019) and marks the 12th entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). In contrast to it’s predecessor Shazam Fury of the Gods garnered mixed reviews from critics and unfortunately turned out to be a Box Office disappointment, earning $134.1 million globally against a production budget of $125 million.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, with a screenplay crafted by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, the story centers on Billy Batson / Shazam and his foster siblings as they battle the Daughters of Atlas to protect the Earth. Development for a sequel to Shazam! commenced shortly after its April 2019 release, with Gayden returning as the writer, and Morgan soon joining to refine Gayden’s script.
By December of that year, Sandberg and Levi were also confirmed to reprise their roles. The title and the returning cast were officially announced in August 2020. Filming kicked off in May in Atlanta, Georgia, and wrapped up in August. Shazam! Fury of the Gods had it’s premiere at the Fox Village Theatre in Los Angeles on March 14, 2023, and was released in the United States on March 17.
