Another adaptation of Alice in Wonderland is set to take us down the rabbit hole. Lewis Carroll’s novels, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, inspired Disney’s beloved 1951 animated film, Alice in Wonderland. Since then, numerous adaptations have emerged, including Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action remake and it’s 2016 sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass. Additionally, spinoffs like the ABC series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland have also contributed to this enchanting universe.
Amazon MGM Studios is working on an animated film featuring the Mad Hatter, directed by Scott Mosier, known for his work on the 2018 film The Grinch. Adam Nagle is on board as a producer through Aniventure, a company that has collaborated with Netflix, Amazon, Sony, and Paramount in the past.
Currently, all details regarding the plot are being kept confidential. The Mad Hatter is a whimsical character known for his top hat, whom Alice meets early in her journey through Wonderland. She is well-known for having a tea party with him, the March Hare, and the Dormouse.
In the 1951 animated film, Ed Wynn lent his voice to this character, while Johnny Depp took on the role in Disney’s live-action adaptations in 2010 and 2016. Additionally, Sebastian Stan portrayed the Mad Hatter in ABC’s Once Upon A Time series.
However, his commitments as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe prevented him from reprising the role for the Wonderland spinoff. Regarding the talent involved in Amazon MGM Studios’ forthcoming Mad Hatter film, Mosier co-directed the 2018 adaptation of The Grinch with Yarrow Cheney.
This fantasy remake achieved remarkable success at the Box Office, earning $553 million globally on a production budget of $75 million. While A-list actor Benedict Cumberbatch lent his voice to the Grinch, it remains uncertain whether a similarly prominent star will be selected to voice the Mad Hatter.
Scott Mosier co-directed Minions and More 2, a collection of animated shorts from Illumination’s Despicable Me series. In addition to his directing work, he often collaborates with Kevin Smith, having both starred in and produced films like Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He has also lent his voice to animated features such as The Grinch, The Secret Life of Pets 2, and Sing 2.
Scott Mosier demonstrated his ability to breathe new life into a classic character with The Grinch, transforming it into a successful animated project. This experience makes him an excellent choice to take on Amazon’s Mad Hatter.
