Universal is said to be working on a sequel to Scarlett Johansson’s 2025 Hit film, Jurassic World Rebirth. Screenwriter David Koepp has now shared an exciting new update regarding the project’s current status. Jurassic World Rebirth, the seventh installment in the Jurassic Park/World series, was Johansson’s debut in a dinosaur-themed film.
Although it received mixed reviews, the movie achieved an impressive Box Office gross of $869 million and secured an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects. This financial success prompted Universal to approve a sequel.
The production team is currently in the initial phases of creating the sequel to Jurassic World Rebirth. The screenwriter, known for writing the original Jurassic Park and The Lost World – Jurassic Park 2, disclosed that no one has yet determined how to “logically and in a scientifically credible manner expand” the franchise.
As Koepp stated, the challenge remains to find a way to authentically grow the story while maintaining scientific plausibility. Koepp advocates for the approach of crafting one exceptional movie at a time rather than contemplating the creation of a new trilogy that begins with Rebirth.
Currently, the attention has turned to Jurassic World 5, where the writer is reflecting on the best way to produce another high-quality film. He recognized that creating Jurassic World Rebirth posed difficulties due to the franchise’s significant growth and widespread nature over the years.
He tackled this challenge by confining the dinosaurs to a specific area, with water playing a crucial role in the film. Koepp believes that if someone at Universal can figure out how to expand the franchise while maintaining a sense of logic and scientific accuracy, then “I think you’ll have a next movie.”
According to David Koepp, “It’s not enough to just call it a trilogy; we need to create one exceptional film first. So, how do we follow that up with another great movie? The challenge with Rebirth lies in the fact that franchises have grown immensely and become quite dispersed. Our goal is to make dinosaurs feel special again by limiting their presence. By doing so, we face the challenge of figuring out how to expand in a way that is both logical and scientifically credible. That is the key question. If someone can find the answer, then we could have a sequel on our hands.”
The franchise began with Michael Crichton’s novel Jurassic Park, published in 1990, which was later transformed into an All-Time Blockbuster film by the renowned director Steven Spielberg in 1993. Jurassic Park stands as one of the most legendary films ever made, featuring a memorable score by John Williams.
It continues to hold the title of the highest-rated film in the franchise, boasting an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel, The Lost World – Jurassic Park 2, was released in 1997, following the publication of Michael Crichton’s book. The original trilogy concluded with Jurassic Park III in 2001.
The intellectual property remained inactive for more than ten years until Colin Trevorrow took the helm of Jurassic World, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter for the franchise and the inaugural film in a new trilogy featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
The subsequent films, Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion, hit theaters in 2018 and 2022, respectively. Jurassic World outperformed Jurassic Park to claim the title of the highest-grossing film in the franchise, a record that still stands today.
Following Dominion, Universal released another chapter titled Jurassic World Rebirth, featuring a completely fresh cast of characters. The film was directed by Gareth Edwards, who took the helm, while Koepp returned after a lengthy 28-year hiatus.
In the intervening years, the screenwriter contributed to notable films such as Spider-Man, War of the Worlds, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Mummy (2017), and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
As of now, Universal has not officially approved the sequel to Jurassic World Rebirth, which means details about the cast, crew, title, and release date remain undisclosed.
