Peter Gallagher expresses immense pride in Mischa Barton’s journey since their days on The O.C. In a recent interview with The Independent, he shared, ‘I’ve always felt a strong sense of protection for her.’
At 69, Peter Gallagher reflects on the challenges of early fame, stating, ‘It can be toxic and even fatal.’ In the early 2000s, Gallagher and Barton shared the screen on The O.C., alongside notable actors like Ben McKenzie, Adam Brody, and Rachel Bilson.
Peter Gallagher portrayed Sandy Cohen, a lawyer in Orange County who takes in the troubled teen Ryan Atwood (played by McKenzie) into his home. Meanwhile, Barton played Marissa Cooper, Ryan’s love interest and the girl next door to the Cohens.
The O.C. captivated audiences for four seasons from 2003 to 2007. Gallagher stayed with the series until the very end, while Barton departed in 2006 following the dramatic death of her character in the unexpected Season 3 finale.
Gallagher expressed his gratitude on Sunday, recalling that she began working with them at the age of 16, and he feels incredibly thankful that she is still alive.
A year after leaving, Barton faced numerous public challenges. In 2007, she was arrested in Los Angeles for driving under the influence, possessing marijuana, and driving without a valid license. She entered a no contest plea and received a sentence of three years’ probation.
Years later, Barton revealed that the fame she gained from the series significantly affected her mental well-being. In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight, she expressed, ‘I’ve previously discussed my feelings of detachment and the impact of fame during my 20s, which made me feel quite agoraphobic. It led to experiences of depression and anxiety that I’ve struggled with throughout my life. I believe in being open about these challenges.’
Mischa Barton also mentioned that she reached out to a counselor to help navigate her emotions and discover a way to move forward. “I engage in conversations with many individuals regarding these topics,” she elaborated. “I believe that true healing comes from being open about your feelings. Concealing your emotions only exacerbates the situation.“
Earlier this year, Barton revealed the complexities she faced while filming The O.C., particularly during her real-life romance with McKenzie, who is now 46.
Interacting with older individuals felt overwhelming, as if they had everything figured out. “I realized that relationships would be a key element of the show, and I needed to step into that role. However, I didn’t feel adequately prepared for it. I was always a late bloomer academically and hadn’t experienced much dating. Honestly, I was quite lost in that regard, which made me feel like I had to quickly get up to speed”, Mischa Barton shared in a February episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast.
