Oppenheimer is a 2023 epic biographical thriller film that was written, co-produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. It chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist instrumental in developing the first nuclear weapons during World War 2. The film is based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, and it dramatizes Oppenheimer’s academic pursuits, his leadership at the Los Alamos Laboratory, and his 1954 security hearing. Oppenheimer garnered extensive critical praise and amassed over $976 million globally at Box Office, securing it’s position as the third-highest-grossing film of 2023.
Cillian Murphy takes on the role of Oppenheimer, with Robert Downey Jr. portraying Lewis Strauss, a member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The announcement of Oppenheimer came in September 2021, marking Nolan’s first film not distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures since Memento (2000), due to disagreements over the studio’s simultaneous release strategy for theaters and HBO Max.
Cillian Murphy was the first actor to be cast, with the remaining cast members joining between November 2021 and April 2022. Pre-production commenced in January 2022, and filming occurred from February to May. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema employed a mix of IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film, including, for the first time, select scenes shot in IMAX black-and-white film.
As with many of his earlier works, Nolan utilized extensive practical effects and claimed to have used minimal compositing; however, the final product included several hundred visual effects shots created by a largely uncredited VFX team of around 160 individuals.
Oppenheimer made it’s debut at Le Grand Rex in Paris on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, and was released in theaters across the United States and the United Kingdom on July 21 by Universal Pictures at Box Office. It’s simultaneous launch alongside Warner Bros.’s Barbie sparked the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon, prompting audiences to enjoy both films as a double feature.
Oppenheimer held the title of the highest-grossing biographical film ever at Box Office until it was surpassed by Michael in 2026. Having received numerous accolades, Oppenheimer was nominated for 13 Awards at the 96th Academy Awards, winning seven, including Best Picture, Best Director (Nolan), Best Actor (Murphy), and Best Supporting Actor (Downey).
Additionally, it claimed five Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Drama) and seven British Academy Film Awards (including Best Film). It was also recognized as one of the top 10 films of 2023 by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.
