Following episode 4 of NCIS – Tony & Ziva, we were completely convinced of the significance of the spinoff featuring Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo. The latest addition to the NCIS franchise brings back it’s most iconic couple, this time away from the Major Care Response Team. In their new series, they are nurturing their daughter, Tali, in Paris, when a significant crisis strikes Tony’s security company.
In recent years, the CBS institution has undergone a notable transformation. Rather than expanding by opening new branches of the agency, it has begun to create unique offshoots for specific characters. This shift commenced with the story of NCIS – Origins, which explores the formative years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the NIS. Now, it’s time for Tony and Ziva to shine in their own spotlight.
In the premiere of NCIS – Tony & Ziva, it is made clear that the duo is not romantically involved. However, they are successfully co-parenting their daughter, Tali. Everything seems to be going well for their little family of three, until a crisis strikes when Tony is wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit.
This Episode Brings Clarity To Their Past Interactions, Making It All Worthwhile
The first three episodes of NCIS – Tony & Ziva successfully established the foundation of the series, while the show continues to explore the most effective ways to convey it’s narrative. With the groundwork laid, Episode 4 of NCIS – Tony & Ziva can now advance it’s storyline — focusing on both the development of the duo’s personal relationship and the events unfolding in their lives.
To be honest, we wasn’t particularly fond of the time-traveling antics of Tony and Ziva in the 3-episode premiere of NCIS. The frequent jumps back in time took away from the opportunity to delve into the more intriguing events happening in the present.
However, we do recognize the direction that the Paramount+ series was attempting to take. By the fourth episode, we are fully convinced that this is the most effective way to narrate the story of NCIS – Tony & Ziva.
Separating the couple is a daring decision to launch a spinoff that guarantees to fulfill their long-anticipated romantic resolution. The flashbacks serve not only to slowly uncover the reasons behind their breakup but also to illustrate the extent of their efforts to reconcile.
Tony and Ziva didn’t display their romance overtly in NCIS. Their flirtation was conveyed through playful banter, and they expressed their emotions through subtle glances and private encounters. Witnessing their open affection for one another in NCIS – Tony & Ziva’s flashback sequences seems like a natural progression from their time in Israel — now with Tali included in the picture.
NCIS – Tony & Ziva Episode 4 Stands Out As The Best Adventure In The Spinoff To Date
Remarkably, NCIS – Tony & Ziva Episode 4 has turned it’s ongoing crisis into a captivating narrative — extending it’s influence beyond just the main characters. By involving Boris and Fruzsi in the storyline, the show skillfully maintains a sense of romance in the current timeline, despite Tony and Ziva showing no interest in rekindling their relationship — not due to a lack of love for one another.
Currently, Boris and Fruzsi are compelling Tali’s parents to reassess their relationship and emotions towards one another, as they observe their counterparts striving for the opportunity to unite.
This adds depth and intrigue to Tony and Ziva’s journey back to one another — a development that has already been confirmed to occur in NCIS – Tony & Ziva.
The only question that remains is when this will actually take place. Although we still hope that NCIS – Tony & Ziva will connect to NCIS Season 23 eventually, episode 4 has convinced us that the series can thrive without any appearances from their Navy Yard colleagues.
It would be delightful to see Tim McGee get involved in some way, but given that the spinoff is currently on firm footing, we have no doubt that Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo can successfully lead the show independently until the conclusion.
