The NCIS franchise typically adheres to a familiar case-of-the-week structure, which can lead to predictable and easily solvable cases. Additionally, the established dynamics among the current team reduce the potential for conflict.
Introducing a new member to the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) in NCIS could inject much-needed excitement and novelty, helping to sustain the series’ longevity.
Nick Torres’ Adversary Reemerged In The Narrative
In Season 22 Episode 15 of NCIS, Agent Dale Sawyer (Zane Holtz) made his comeback. As the primary rival of Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), this episode delivered a dose of humor woven into the storyline. Much of the comedy stemmed from lighthearted interactions, like Torres puzzling over how Sawyer could afford a pick-up truck while working night shifts.
We also witnessed Torres adjusting some of his routines in hopes of acquiring a similar vehicle, including opting for a simple black coffee instead of his usual, pricier coffee choice. In the episode, Dale Sawyer revealed that he had been working as a private security guard for a wealthy young woman, a move that violated NCIS regulations.
When the truth surfaced, he was demoted to probationary status, which meant teaming up with McGee (Sean Murray) and Torres, much to Torres’ amusement. This situation not only increased the interactions between Sawyer and Torres but also paved the way for fresh and exciting developments.
NCIS Must Evolve Beyond Its Predictable Formula
A repetitive and predictable pattern in a TV series often drives viewers to seek alternative options. Audiences crave thrill and unpredictability, rather than storylines that are easily anticipated and resolved. Shows like NCIS must keep us engaged and on the edge of our seats, and even a minor change, such as a shift in the cast, can create that excitement. While there will always be beloved characters, embracing change can be beneficial.
Sawyer’s comeback to NCIS doesn’t necessarily indicate that a complete overhaul is required. Instead of replacing an existing team member with a newcomer, NCIS could simply expand the current team.
Currently, there are four field agents, but historically, the team has included five or six members at various points, depending on the narrative. This raises intriguing questions about the seating arrangements for the MCRT members in the bullpen, creating opportunities for fresh dynamics as partnerships are rearranged.
The team’s dynamics become more unpredictable, leading to a reduction in repetitive arguments. Simultaneously, the current NCIS cast has greater opportunities for development. With Bishop (Emily Wickersham) departing and Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) stepping in, both Torres and McGee had to adjust to Knight’s working style and the fresh perspectives she introduced.
Similarly, when Leroy Jethro Gibbs left and Parker took over as the new leader, McGee, Torres, Palmer (Brian Dietzen), and Kasie (Diona Reasonover) all had to acclimate to this different approach to leadership.
NCIS Needs To Introduce A Character Who Is Capable of Making Errors & Growing From Them
Introducing a new recruit would be a fantastic addition to NCIS, evoking nostalgia for the show’s earlier seasons. In the first two seasons, the charming dynamic between DiNozzo and McGee showcased McGee’s journey as he adapted to the life of a field agent.
With Ziva’s arrival, viewers witnessed her adaptation to American customs after her upbringing in Israel. The interactions among these characters not only provided humor but also highlighted their personal growth and development.
The series hasn’t introduced a genuine probie in quite a while. Dale Sawyer doesn’t qualify since he has already accumulated years of experience on the night shift.
Therefore, the show should consider bringing in a new, youthful character. This would provide an opportunity for the existing team members to enhance their leadership skills and demonstrate their growth throughout the years in NCIS.
Additionally, a true probie can make errors that serve as valuable learning experiences, ultimately resulting in more intricate cases for the team to tackle.
