Universal’s Christopher Nolan film The Odyssey has been raking in double-digit millions daily, concluding it’s first week at the North American Box Office with an impressive $199.3 million across 3,919 theaters. After earning $17.6 million on Thursday, which reflects a minimal 3% decrease from Wednesday’s $18 million, the film’s performance is noteworthy.
In the context of Nolan’s films, The Odyssey ranks third in it’s opening week, following The Dark Knight ($238.6 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($225 million), while surpassing Oppenheimer ($127.8 million) and Inception ($100.1 million).
The Odyssey has maintained it’s remarkable Box Office success, raking in an impressive $87 million from 3,943 theaters across North America during it’s second weekend. This figure is one that many films, particularly those rated R, would be thrilled to achieve in their first weekends.
Ticket sales for The Odyssey saw a modest decline of only 30% from it’s impressive $123.5 million opening, highlighting the Box Office resilience of director Christopher Nolan. Typically, major films that debut over $100 million experience a drop of 50% or more in the following weekends.
Additionally, R ratings can restrict a film’s audience, as they prevent most individuals under 18 from purchasing tickets. In this context, the turnout for The Odyssey marks the second-largest second weekend for an R-rated film, following Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which garnered $96 million in its second weekend after an unprecedented $221 million domestic launch.
Following two weekends in theaters, Nolan’s high-budget adaptation of Homer’s legendary poem, featuring Matt Damon as the Greek monarch Odysseus, has earned $286.4 million in North America and $639.6 million worldwide.
Next weekend, The Odyssey will face a challenge with the debut of Spider-Man – Brand New Day. This Sony Marvel film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, may divert audience attention. Nevertheless, theater owners are incredibly excited about the potential of having two blockbuster films to boost the usually sluggish month of August.
The Odyssey has made a significant impact in Imax, and it’s easy to see why; it is the first feature film entirely captured with the company’s advanced cameras. To date, it has amassed $140 million worldwide in Imax, which includes $78 million from the domestic market and $62 million from international audiences.
This film has become the second-fastest to reach the $100 million milestone for the company, achieving this feat in just 10 days. For comparison, Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, garnered $180 million in Imax by the conclusion of it’s theatrical release.
The exclusive 70mm Imax screens — of which there are only 41 globally — contributed $5.2 million over the weekend and a total of $16.9 million so far, accounting for 12.1% of the overall Imax Box Office. Given that cinephiles are aware that Imax 70mm is Nolan’s favored format, many of those showtimes are already sold out through September.
Thanks to enthusiastic word-of-mouth and significant interest in premium large formats, The Odyssey is anticipated to be a major attraction all summer long and into the fall. It is likely to rank among the top-grossing films of the year.
This potential, combined with the likelihood of Oscar nominations and the prestige of collaborating with Nolan, the most commercially successful director of his generation, will undoubtedly validate the film’s hefty budget for Universal. The studio invested an impressive $250 million in production and approximately $125 million in marketing the film.
