Mark Harmon’s character Leroy Jethro Gibbs has sparked a wave of intrigue with just a few words, as CBS’ NCIS : Origins has captured the attention of millions. This prequel spinoff is now being viewed through a fresh lens, igniting curiosity and excitement among fans. The camera unmistakably identifies her as Special Agent Cecilia Lala Dominguez, a role brought to life by actress Mariel Molino, known for her performances in Promised Land and The Watchful Eye.
The narrative that Gibbs shares primarily revolves around Lala, as confirmed by NCIS : Origins co-showrunner David J. North in an interview with TV Line.
While the story encompasses much more than just Lala, she undeniably serves as a central figure in this untold tale of how Gibbs evolved into the character we recognize today.
Mariel Molino prior to the season, delving into Lala’s background hints at the intriguing untold story that she is intricately involved in. She has unveiled 11 exciting new details about NCIS : Origins that you won’t want to miss.
1) The Most Observant Character Among The Agents
As per Mariel Molino, “My character is probably the most observant.”
2) Does Lala Has A Dark Sense of Humor ?
Mariel Molino : Upon encountering Lala, we find ourselves amidst a rather grim setting, and she candidly shares with Gibbs (portrayed by Austin Stowell), It takes me back to my childhood. Her humor is often tinged with a dry and dark edge, which I absolutely adore. Personally, I relish every chance to inject humor into situations, but Lala’s wit leans more towards the sarcastic side, without a doubt.
3) The Series-Opening Crime Scene Was One of The Wildest On NCIS Shows
Mariel Molino : I must admit, we were truly astonished to perform in a house that had been nearly destroyed by fire and then rebuilt in a different area of the lot. The experience was quite intense. It effectively sets the stage for Gibbs, portraying him as the ideal individual who can provide crucial insights into this particular crime.
4) Where Does Lala Hail From ?
Mariel Molino : San Diego is her hometown, just like mine. It’s amusing to think that during my audition, the producers assumed I hailed from New York. They mentioned, ‘We’ll need to adjust your accent to reflect San Diego.’ I had to clarify, Hold on ! I’m actually from San Diego !
5) Where Does Lala Rank In Terms of Seniority On The Team ?
Mariel Molino : She holds a higher rank than everyone on the team, with the exception of Franks (Kyle Schmid), of course. When we first encounter the team, she serves as his trusted right-hand agent. Her position is slightly above Randy (Caleb Foote), but that’s primarily due to her longer tenure. Additionally, since Gibbs is essentially the rookie, she also has a higher rank than him.
6) With Which Characters She Has The Most Specific Dynamic ?
According to Mariel Molino, “There is a distinct and intense relationship between her and Franks, filled with underlying tension. It resembles the dynamic of a child striving to gain their father’s approval while simultaneously challenging his authority and judgment. She admires Franks, viewing him as a figure to look up to, yet his decision-making often leaves her feeling frustrated.”
“In contrast, her relationship with Caleb’s character, Randy, is much more relaxed and comfortable, resembling that of a close-knit family. Additionally, she regards Vera Strickland, portrayed by Diany Rodriguez, as a significant role model. Vera serves as an inspiration not only as a woman and a fellow agent but also as a trusted friend, making her a go-to person for guidance.”
7) Will Lala and Gibbs’ Story Would Be Filled With Sparks ?
Mariel Molino : There’s definitely a flicker of something, but I wouldn’t classify it as romantic just yet. The sparks we’re witnessing seem to arise more from underlying tension and a sense of frustration.
8) He challenges Her ? She Challenges Him ?
Mariel Molino : She puts him to the test. She doubts his readiness for the role and questions his decision-making skills. There’s an underlying sense of insecurity on her part, as she recognizes that he is exceptionally intelligent and capable, which makes her feel threatened by his potential to overshadow her. This situation creates a complex mix of emotions regarding his future position and authority. While I previously mentioned the familial bond with Franks, the dynamic with Gibbs resembles that of a new sibling suddenly receiving all the attention, making it challenging for Lala. It’s important to consider that this takes place in the 1990s, a time when the industry was predominantly male.
9) Technology & Male-Female Dynamics of The 1990s, Which Were Wildly Different
Mariel Molino : Completely contrasting. As an actor, I can attest that it’s a challenge to balance being strong and assertive with showing compassion and understanding, all while worrying that this sensitivity might be perceived as a flaw.
10) Why Gibbs Story About Lala Gone Untold Or Only Have Theories ?
Mariel Molino : I discovered that the narrative Gibbs shares revolves around her when I went through the pilot episode. It caught me off guard as well, sparking my curiosity about the character. Since that moment, showrunners Gina (Lucita Monreal) and David (J. North) have provided me with some hints about the direction of the story. I can confidently say that she will play a significant role in shaping Gibbs’ journey. Their relationship will be one of mutual learning, requiring them to build trust despite their contrasting backgrounds.
11) What’s The Most 1990s Thing You’ve Gotten To Wear So Far ?
Mariel Molino : In addition to my beeper, which I keep right at my hip. I’ve made a conscious effort to add a variety of textures to my look. I’ve always admired Julia Roberts and her iconic 1990s fashion, particularly her knack for pairing vests with blouses or shirts underneath. This has been a significant inspiration for me while developing this character. Thankfully, our creative team embraced this vision, and it’s featured prominently on the posters. I’m thrilled to incorporate elements of her style that are not only stylish but also practical for this environment.
