Lily James portrayed Lady Rose in Downton Abbey, yet her vibrant character has not graced our screens since the Christmas Special of Season 6 and has been absent from the Downton Abbey films. Crafted by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey emerged as a worldwide sensation, running for 6 seasons before transitioning to cinema with three feature films, including Downton Abbey – The Grand Finale.
Premiered on September 12, Downton Abbey – The Grand Finale is heralded as the conclusion of the Crawley family’s story, which, at one point, featured Lady Rose. Introduced at the conclusion of Downton Abbey’s third season, Lady Rose MacClaire is the cousin of Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and the great-niece of Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith), the Dowager Countess.
After Rose’s parents, Hugh (Peter Egan) and Susan MacClare (Phoebe Nicholls), relocated to India, Lady Rose received an invitation to stay at Downton Abbey. With her typical romances, Rose brought a touch of modernity and a hint of rebellion to the Crawley family.
Additionally, Lady Rose was presented at Buckingham Palace, where she had the honor of dancing with the Prince of Wales. However, when Lady Rose departed from Downton Abbey, her departure became a permanent one.
Lady Rose Tied The Knot & Relocated to America Following Her Time On Downton Abbey
Lady Rose encountered and wed Atticus Aldridge (Matt Barber) during Season 5 of Downton Abbey, thus becoming Lady Rose Aldridge. After their honeymoon in Venice, Rose and Atticus relocated to New York, where Atticus secured employment.
Subsequently, Rose welcomed their daughter, Victoria Rachel Cora Aldridge. Atticus and Rose made their last appearance in the Christmas special of Downton Abbey Season 6, titled “The Finale,” to commemorate the wedding of Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) and Bertie Pelham (Harry Hadden-Paton).
Lady Rose and Atticus continue to be cherished members of the Crawley family, even though they did not appear in the 2019 Downton Abbey feature film or it’s sequel, Downton Abbey – A New Era.
They chose to stay in their new home in America, which meant they unfortunately missed the thrilling visit from King George (Simon Jones) and Queen Mary (Geraldine James) at Downton, as well as the filming of the feature movie during Downton Abbey – A New Era.
Additionally, since Lady Violet’s passing occurred offscreen in Downton Abbey – A New Era, it remains unclear whether Rose, Atticus, and Victoria traveled back to England for Violet’s funeral.
Replacing Lady Sybil Was A Significant Challenge For Lady Rose
Lily James stepped into the role in Downton Abbey primarily to take over from Jessica Brown-Findlay, who left the show. Jessica’s cherished character, Lady Sybil, met her tragic end in Season 3 due to eclampsia, a complication following the birth of her daughter, Sybbie.
As Lady Rose, James brought a similar youthful vibrancy that Lady Sybil possessed, yet with an added touch of endearing innocence. Lady Rose defied her strict mother and pursued love and romance on her own terms. In Season 4 of Downton Abbey, Lady Rose developed feelings for Jack Ross (Gary Carr), an African American jazz singer.
Her romance with Jack and the decision to introduce him to Downton Abbey was seen as scandalous, yet the way the show addressed the cultural dynamics of their relationship sparked controversy. Following her breakup with Jack, Rose became engaged to Atticus, who is Jewish, but this engagement faced disapproval from both her mother and Atticus’ father, Daniel, Lord Sinderby (James Faulkner).
Ultimately, Rose’s kind-hearted nature triumphed, leading her to marry Atticus after assisting Lord Sinderby in preserving his dignity. Sinderby had been involved in an affair with a woman named Diana Clark (Alice Patten), resulting in an illegitimate child.
Rose’s swift actions averted a public scandal when Diana showed up at Rose and Atticus’s engagement celebration. Despite her youthful missteps and the contentious narratives surrounding her, Lady Rose stood out as one of the most compassionate characters in Downton Abbey.
The Reasons Behind Lily James’ Absence As Lady Rose In A Downton Abbey Film
When the first Downton Abbey film debuted in 2019, viewers quickly noticed that Lily James was missing from the main cast. After all, Lady Rose was still alive and thriving, having established herself as a beloved member of the Crawley family.
In response to her absence, Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes spoke to Entertainment Weekly, explaining, “She can’t be in it [because] she’s in every other film in the world at the moment.”
According to Julian Fellowes, “Lily has become a major star, and it would have been extremely challenging for her to carve out time in her busy schedule to take on what is essentially a supporting role in Downton, especially considering her career trajectory was quite different when she was part of our team. Ultimately, we all agreed that it was best for her to remain in America.”
Lily James departed from Downton Abbey to take on the lead role in Disney’s live-action version of Cinderella. This pivotal moment set her on a trajectory toward movie stardom, leading to prominent roles in films such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Baby Driver, Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again, Darkest Hour, where she portrayed Pamela Anderson in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy, The Iron Claw, and soon, the reboot of Cliffhanger.
Julian Fellowes referred to Lily James as “our greatest success story,” highlighting her remarkable rise to fame since departing from Downton Abbey. James continues to be highly sought after, yet, unfortunately, she is not included in the cast for Downton Abbey – The Grand Finale.
Despite Lily James’ impressive career trajectory following her role in Downton Abbey, Lady Rose is still cherished by her family in Yorkshire and by fans who long for her cheerful and radiant personality.
