The latest trailer for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan – Ghost War (oh my goodness) has been released, and if you watched Mission Impossible 5, you may experience a sense of déjà vu. John Krasinski reprises his role as Jack Ryan in this feature-length continuation of his Amazon Prime series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Following a teaser that dropped in March, we now have the complete trailer.
Following his retirement from the CIA, Ryan (Krasinski) is pulled back into action when a faction called “Starling” begins to create chaos. Initially, Starling was an unauthorized assembly of CIA-trained agents, expertly trained as covert assassins with a focus on psychological warfare.
Even though it has been shut down, Starling has made a comeback and is now attempting to eliminate the very individuals they once safeguarded. This plot certainly sounds intriguing, but it may also remind you of another well-known spy series Mission Impossible. Prior to Starling, we were introduced to The Syndicate.
The Villainous Group In Jack Ryan Closely Resembles The Syndicate From Mission – Impossible
The storyline of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan – Ghost War closely resembles that of Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation (by the way, we suggest to impose a ban on colons in movie titles, for what reason?). The fifth installment of the Mission Impossible series also focuses on a team of operatives, once allies, who have turned rogue.
The Syndicate is a British initiative formed with ex-covert agents from various nations to carry out the unsavory tasks for specific government officials, all without any supervision. However, when Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) assumes control of the group, he transforms The Syndicate into a global terrorist organization that aims to establish a new world order.
This closely resembles the storyline presented in Ghost War, yet we remain unaware of Starling’s reasons for turning against it’s handlers. Additionally, Ghost War seems to introduce a substitute for Rebecca Ferguson‘ Ilsa Faust character, embodied by an unnamed operative portrayed by Sienna Miller, who appears to be well-informed about Starling.
Jack Ryan’s Transition From Television Highlights The Similarities With The Mission Impossible Franchise
If this Jack Ryan production were not a film, it might be less straightforward to draw comparisons with Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation. Given that Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan has transitioned from the small screen to the big screen, it is only natural that it will be measured against another leading spy franchise.
The storyline of a once-reputable group of soldiers or a trusted ally going rogue is not a novel concept. Numerous spy films and television series have explored this theme. The comparison would be less apparent if Ghost War were not a movie and if it weren’t being released following the success of the interconnected Mission Impossible franchise.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is an exceptional series, and although a fifth season was likely considered, the showrunners and Amazon chose to conclude with a film instead. While this is a perfectly valid and thrilling choice, it does imply that Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan – Ghost War is now held to a higher standard.
