Apologies to Jennifer Coolidge fans, but we believe her character should not make a comeback in a sequel to A Minecraft Movie. Since its debut, A Minecraft Movie has established itself as a powerhouse at the Box Office.
As of now, it has accumulated a staggering $955 million globally, indicating that A Minecraft Movie is on track to surpass the $1 billion mark. Given its remarkable Box Office success, it is nearly certain that a sequel to A Minecraft Movie will be approved in the near future.
Despite the mixed reviews for A Minecraft Movie, we genuinely hope a sequel is produced. While we didn’t find A Minecraft Movie particularly enjoyable, we believe there is significant story potential for a follow-up.
It would be exciting to see characters such as Steve, Garrett, Henry, Natalie, Dawn, and the newly introduced Alex delve deeper into the Overworld in a sequel. However, we feel that Jennifer Coolidge should not reprise her role in A Minecraft Movie 2 after the first film.
Jennifer Coolidge’ Role In The Minecraft Movie Was Solely For Comedic Relief
In the Minecraft Movie, Jennifer Coolidge portrays Marlene, the head of Henry’s school. Initially, Marlene seems to take an interest in Garrett, but this interest doesn’t develop further. As Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn are drawn into the portal that transports them to the Overworld, Marlene stays in the real world throughout the film.
However, she does engage with the Overworld when she strikes the villager who enters the real world. After striking the villager, referred to as the nitwit, Marlene finds herself yearning for forgiveness and proposes to take him out for dinner.
Consequently, A Minecraft Movie frequently transitions between the character’s escapades in the Overworld and Marlene’s outing with the nitwit. Their dinner date features several comedic instances, including Marlene asserting that the nitwit is Finnish to justify his looks and his inability to communicate in English.
Nevertheless, Marlene’s narrative could be entirely omitted from A Minecraft Movie, and it would hardly make a difference.
A Sequel To The Minecraft Movie Should Primarily Concentrate On The Characters Within The Overworld
In the post-credits scene of A Minecraft Movie, we discover that the nitwit has acquired the ability to speak English due to a romantic relationship with Marlene. This revelation indicates that villagers in A Minecraft Movie can communicate in different languages.
While this is intriguing, we believe it shouldn’t serve as a central plot element in a possible sequel. Consequently, we don’t see a compelling reason to have Jennifer Coolidge return for A Minecraft Movie 2.
Moreover, while her date with the fool is amusing, it becomes somewhat frustrating each time A Minecraft Movie shifts from the Overworld to the real world. The Overworld serves as the backdrop for the main narrative of A Minecraft Movie, whereas Marlene’s date with the villager is merely a comedic element.
Given that Marlene does not play a significant role in the Overworld’s main storyline, there seems to be no justification for her return in the sequel. This is particularly true as we anticipate that the sequel will mainly focus on the Overworld.
Rather than delving deeper into Marlene’s relationship with the fool, we would prefer A Minecraft Movie 2 to focus mainly on characters like Steve and Alex as they set off on another adventure in the Overworld. Besides showcasing more of the Overworld, a sequel could also allow characters to explore the Nether further and possibly even journey to the End to battle the Ender Dragon.
In summary, there are numerous paths a sequel to A Minecraft Movie could take, but we believe Coolidge’s character won’t contribute anything particularly engaging to the narrative.
