Although Zootopia 2 is a family-friendly Disney film, it initially featured a four-minute tribute to The Silence of the Lambs. This animated sequel from Disney is packed with Easter eggs, one of which nods to Pixar’s Ratatouille when a lion chef’s hat is dislodged, exposing a rat beneath who is truly responsible for the cooking.
In a conversation with Media Channels, co-director Jared Bush explained that there is a nod to The Silence of the Lambs, as the imprisoned Mayor Bellwether is designed to evoke memories of Anthony Hopkins’ iconic Hannibal Lecter.
Jared Bush discloses that the scene originally lasted four minutes, featuring the characters reciting the exact dialogue exchanged between Lecter and Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling during their initial encounter in the 1991 horror film.
Nevertheless, he ultimately recognized that the scene had overstayed it’s welcome and became concerned about alienating younger audiences.
According to Jared Bush, “That scene was originally four minutes in duration. We meticulously crafted the first scene where Hannibal Lecter encounters Clarice, right down to the guard’s instruction, ‘All the way down the left, stay to the right.’ This is our destination, yet we have now alienated our younger viewers.”
The completed version of the film opts for a more understated approach with it’s Silence of the Lambs Easter egg, rather than expanding it into a lengthy four-minute sequence.
In a manner reminiscent of Lecter, Bellwether also manages to break free from her confinement, but rather than employing a cunning and merciless plan, her escape is facilitated by Nick Wilde inadvertently releasing all the inmates.
However, Nick and Judy Hopps do manage to apprehend her again in the post-credits scene of Zootopia 2. Another iconic horror movie, The Shining, seemingly features even more notable Easter eggs in Zootopia 2.
Jared Bush and his co-director, Byron Howard, affirm that the Lynxley manor and the enormous maze behind it pay tribute to the Overlook Hotel and the legendary hedge maze, including a scene of “unhinged Pawbert as Jack Nicholson.”
With an impressive 91% critical score and a remarkable 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Zootopia 2 has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. If Bush and Howard had decided to retain the four-minute homage to Silence of the Lambs in their film, they likely would have faced a temporary loss of audience engagement, particularly among younger viewers.
Although many adults would have appreciated the references and the exact dialogue, it was a gamble that the film did not need to take, especially since it was not essential to the plot.
Navigating the delicate balance of satisfying audiences across all age groups is crucial to the success of Disney’s animated films. With the overwhelmingly positive reception of Zootopia 2 and it’s impressive Box Office debut, Disney appears to have found the perfect equilibrium once more.
