Why James Van Der Beek Shocked After Learning of His Stage 3 Cancer ?

James Van Der Beek shared on November 3 that he has been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer at the age of 46. The actor is now candidly discussing his health journey to help raise awareness about a disease that is increasingly affecting otherwise healthy individuals under 55.

James Van Der Beek, aged 47, who resides on a ranch in Texas with his wife Kimberly (aged 42), and their six children – Olivia (age 14), Joshua (age 12), Annabel (age 10), Emilia (age 8), Gwen (age 6) and Jeremiah (age 3), shares his feelings, “One of the key motivations behind my decision to discuss this openly is to shed light on the issue. I’ve been navigating this largely in silence for some time, and I’ve discovered that sharing my experiences publicly can be both healing and liberating. I’ve received tremendous support through this process. However, my primary goal is to raise awareness.”

The American Cancer Society reports a concerning trend – 1 in 5 new colorectal cancer cases now occur in individuals under 55, a significant increase from 1 in 10 in 1995.

James Van Der Beek reflects on his shocking diagnosis, expressing disbelief that it could happen to him at this point in his life. With no family history of cancer and a commitment to fitness and nutrition, he felt secure in his health.

According to James Van Der Beek, “I always thought of cancer as something that affected older people or those with unhealthy lifestyles. Yet, I was in excellent cardiovascular condition and made an effort to eat well—at least, as well as I understood it back then.”

In the summer of 2023, James began to observe alterations in his bowel habits. He suspected that his diet might be the culprit.

He reflects, “I considered giving up coffee altogether. Perhaps I should just skip the cream. But after eliminating those, and seeing no improvement, I realized it was time to get a professional opinion.”

After his colonoscopy, he felt a sense of relief.

James reveals, “Emerging from anesthesia, I was proud to have taken that step. Then, with a surprisingly gentle tone, the gastroenterologist delivered the news. It was cancer. I think I was in disbelief.”

James Van Der Beek has embarked on a journey through various treatments, which often involve surgery and chemotherapy. Although he prefers to keep the specifics of his medical routine private for now, he hints, “If you’ve heard about it, I’ve likely experienced it.”

He describes this experience as an intense lesson in mastering the mind, body, and spirit. As per James, “I realized, ‘This could either pull me away from my body, or it could show me how to genuinely embrace life within it.’”

Despite his efforts to maintain a positive outlook, he acknowledges that it can be quite challenging at times.

He further explains, “The most difficult aspect is the multitude of uncertainties that come with cancer. You find yourself wondering, ‘How can I resolve this ? Is this treatment beneficial ? Is it causing harm ? Is it effective ? Will it return ?’ As someone who thrives on having clear answers, the lack of certainty is incredibly tough to handle.”

Regarding his present health status, James prefers not to discuss specific stages of recovery or remission. However, he does express that he is feeling well.

James shares, “I feel a sense of cautious optimism. I’m currently focused on my healing journey, and my energy is at an all-time high. Once I’ve fully emerged from this challenging period and it feels appropriate, I’ll reach out to update you. I have so much to look forward to.”
