Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a 2023 American action-adventure film directed by James Mangold, with a screenplay co-written by Mangold, David Koepp, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth. This film marks the fifth and final chapter in the Indiana Jones series, serving as a sequel to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny garnered mixed reviews from critics and earned $384 million globally, which marked it as a Box-Office disappointment.
Set against the backdrop of 1969, the story follows Jones and his estranged goddaughter, Helena, as they race to find a powerful artifact before Dr. Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who has become a NASA scientist, can use it to change the course of World War II.
The journey to create a fifth Indiana Jones film began in 1979 when a deal was struck with Paramount Pictures to produce five films in the franchise. George Lucas started exploring potential storylines for this fifth installment in 2008, and in 2016, Koepp was brought on board to write the screenplay.
Jonathan Kasdan took over the writing duties in 2018 but eventually departed from the project. Initially scheduled for a 2019 release, the film encountered several delays due to rewrites and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct, he stepped aside in 2020, allowing Mangold to take the helm.
Filming commenced in June 2021 across various locations, including the United Kingdom, Italy, and Morocco, concluding in February 2022. Renowned franchise composer John Williams returned to create the film’s score, receiving nominations for Best Original Score at the 96th Academy Awards and Best Score at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.
John Williams was awarded the Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition for “Helena’s Theme.” With a budget of $419 million, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny stands as one of the most expensive films ever produced. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny made it’s debut out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, and was subsequently released in the United States on June 30 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
