The Conjuring Universe stands as the sole successful cinematic universe apart from Marvel’s esteemed endeavors. While the DCU faltered with it’s second installment and the Dark Universe tripped over it’s initial release, Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe is best left unmentioned. The Monsterverse has seen some success, yet only The Conjuring Universe has achieved the record-breaking milestones set by the MCU. It proudly holds the title of the highest-grossing horror franchise ever, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
The remarkable success of The Conjuring franchise is difficult to comprehend. While there are numerous other successful horror franchises from the same period — such as The Purge, Insidious, Sinister, and the Halloween reboot — none have come close to achieving the impressive figures of The Conjuring.
None have maintained the same level of consistent success as this saga. The most recent installment, The Conjuring – Last Rites, raked in half a billion dollars at the Box Office. Such earnings are unprecedented in the horror genre, particularly for a franchise that has reached it’s ninth film.
These figures rival those of iconic titles like Exorcist, Obsession, and It; they represent the pinnacle of horror Box Office achievement. The Conjuring – Last Rites, as it’s name implies, was intended to be the concluding installment of The Conjuring series.
It was promoted as the ultimate finale of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s paranormal investigations. However, after it grossed over half a billion dollars at the Box Office, all discussions about it being the “final movie” vanished, prompting Warner Bros. to quickly approve another installment in the Conjuring franchise.
However, it does not negate the conclusive ending of Last Rites. They have discovered a method to create a new Conjuring film without altering the conclusion (at least for the time being). The Conjuring – First Communion, scheduled for release on September 10, 2027 (two years and five days after Last Rites seemingly concluded the franchise), will serve as a prequel delving into the origin story of Ed and Lorraine.
The Conjuring – First Communion Is Reimagining The Roles of Young Ed & Lorraine Warren
The Conjuring – First Communion is beginning to subtly alter the franchise’s narrative. Given that this prequel is almost certain to clash with some details and plot points from earlier films, it will be difficult to maintain consistency after more than ten years of movies.
If the filmmakers are doing their job effectively, their main focus should be on making this prequel the best it can be, rather than ensuring it remains completely true to the existing Conjuring canon. The producers have already announced a major retcon. They will be recasting the younger Ed and Lorraine.
Since 2013, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have masterfully portrayed Ed and Lorraine, captivating audiences with their performances and undeniable on-screen chemistry, which may even overshadow the characters themselves.
This makes a prequel a risky venture. We might find ourselves in a scenario similar to Solo – A Star Wars Story, where viewers turn away from the new actor portraying a younger version of a beloved character.
Conversely, we could witness a situation akin to Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, where the younger actor becomes even more iconic in the role than the original. Ultimately, the success of this endeavor depends on the casting choices made.
In Last Rites, the younger versions of the Warrens were portrayed by two lesser-known actors, Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor. However, for First Communion, the producers have chosen to replace them with Garrett Wareing and Amanda Fix.
It remains to be seen if they can match the impressive performances of Wilson and Farmiga, but they certainly seem to fit the roles well.
