Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is a 2023 American superhero film inspired by Marvel Comics, showcasing the superhero ensemble known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, this film serves as the sequel to both Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 (2017), marking it as the 32nd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is a smash Hit at Box Office.
The film is both written and directed by James Gunn. In this installment, the remaining Guardians are on a mission to save Rocket’s (Cooper) life from his creator, the High Evolutionary (Iwuji), an alien scientist intent on perfecting the universe.
James Gunn had envisioned a third and final Guardians of the Galaxy film as early as November 2014, and he confirmed his return to write and direct in April 2017, prior to the release of Volume 2. Volume 3 delves into Rocket’s origin story, a character with whom Gunn has a personal connection.
However, in July 2018, Disney dismissed Gunn from Volume 3 due to the resurfacing of controversial jokes he made on Twitter. Despite this setback, Gunn received backing from several cast members, leading the studio to reverse it’s decision by October of that year.
His return was publicly announced in March 2019, and he resumed work on the film after completing The Suicide Squad (2021) and the first season of its spin-off series Peacemaker (2022) for DC Films. New cast members, including Iwuji and Poulter, were added as filming commenced at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, from November 2021 to May 2022.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 had it’s premiere at Disneyland Paris on April 22, 2023, and was released in the United States on May 5, as part of Phase Five of the MCU. Like it’s predecessors, it achieved both critical and commercial success, with numerous critics praising it as a fitting conclusion to the trilogy.
The film achieved a remarkable gross of over $845.6 million globally, securing it’s position as the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2023. Additionally, it received a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards. This impressive performance highlights it’s success and recognition in the industry.
