Fast X, also referred to as Fast & Furious 10, is a 2023 American action film directed by Louis Leterrier, featuring a screenplay by Dan Mazeau and Justin Lin, who co-wrote the story with Zach Dean. This film serves as the sequel to F9 (2021) and marks the tenth main entry and the eleventh overall in the Fast & Furious series. Fast X is a disaster at domestic Box Office.
In this installment, Toretto faces the challenge of safeguarding his family from Dante Reyes (Momoa), who seeks vengeance for his father’s demise and the loss of their wealth. The journey to create the tenth main Fast & Furious film commenced by October 2020, with Lin set to direct. The film’s official title was disclosed when principal photography kicked off in April 2022.
However, Lin stepped down as director later that month due to creative differences, although he maintained his writing and producing credits. Shortly after, Leterrier was brought on board as his successor and made several uncredited revisions to the screenplay. Brian Tyler, a longtime composer for the franchise, returned to provide the film’s score.
With an estimated production budget of $378.8 million, Fast X ranks as the sixth-most expensive film ever produced. Filming continued until August, taking place in various locations including London, Rome, Turin, Lisbon, and Los Angeles.
Fast X had it’s premiere in Rome on May 12, 2023, and was released in the United States on May 19 by Universal Pictures. The film garnered mixed reviews from critics, who praised it’s action sequences and Momoa’s performance, but criticized the writing. It grossed $714 million globally, which was not enough to break even, despite it being the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2023.
