Evil Dead Rise is a supernatural horror film from 2023, crafted by the talented Lee Cronin as both writer and director. This film marks the fifth entry in the iconic Evil Dead series. Critics responded positively, and Evil Dead Rise grossed an impressive $147 million globally, making it the highest-grossing film in the series at Box Office.
This project is a collaborative effort among New Zealand, Ireland, and the United States. Before this film’s creation, there were plans for direct sequels to Evil Dead (2013) and Army of Darkness (1992), as well as a fourth season of Ash vs Evil Dead (2015–2018) that were ultimately scrapped.
In October 2019, Sam Raimi revealed that a new film was in the works, with Rob Tapert producing, and Raimi alongside Bruce Campbell serving as executive producers, while Cronin took on the writing and directing duties. New Line Cinema, the distributor of the original film, was also announced as a production partner.
Filming took place in New Zealand from June to October 2021. Initially, the film was slated for release on HBO Max, but following favorable test screenings, Warner Bros. Pictures decided to give it a theatrical release instead.
Evil Dead Rise made it’s debut at the South by Southwest festival on March 15, 2023, and was released in the United States on April 21 by Warner Bros. Pictures. At the 51st Saturn Awards, it received nominations for Best Horror Film and Best Make-up.
