The highly anticipated spinoff of Blue Bloods, titled Boston Blue, premiered it’s first episode on CBS on October 17, 2025. This series, starring Ernie Hudson, presents an unusual continuity challenge concerning the actor. Nevertheless, he clarifies why this inconsistency is insignificant and comforts the audience by assuring them that all will be well.
Boston Blue is a gripping police procedural drama that follows Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) as he departs from the NYPD to accept a role at the Boston Police Department. This exciting spinoff features a talented cast including Maggie Lawson (Sarah Silver), Gloria Reuben (Mae Silver), Marcus Scribner (Jonah Silver), Sonequa Martin-Green (Lena Silver), and Mika Amonsen (Sean Reagan).
In a recent media interview, Ernie Hudson, who portrays Reverend Peters in the new series, was questioned about his guest role in Blue Bloods back in 2018. Initially, the actor chuckled and feigned ignorance about the topic. He remarked, “That was a character who resembled me, and I believe he was in a state of distress.”
The actor mentioned that although he had a brief appearance on Blue Bloods portraying a character quite distinct from his current role in the new series, it wasn’t particularly significant since Boston Blue is designed to be a completely separate entity.
According to Ernie Hudson, “This is a different family — clearly — in Boston. This character is just a very, very different person from what I recall that character to be. I never want to imply, ‘Forget anything I’ve done.’ However, it’s simply a very different universe and a different world.”
In Season 8 Episode 14 (School of Hard Knocks) of the flagship show, Hudson made a guest appearance. He portrayed Darryl Ward, the principal of a school where a student fell victim to a gang-related shooting. As Danny and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) work to calm the situation, Principal Ward devises his own highly reckless approach to address the issue.
Boston Blue made it’s debut on October 17, 2025. New episodes are set to air on CBS every Friday at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT. You can also stream Blue Bloods on Paramount+.
