Dungeons & Dragons – Honor Among Thieves is a fantasy heist comedy film released in 2023, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. They co-wrote the screenplay alongside Michael Gilio, based on a story by Chris McKay and Gilio. Despite it’s acclaim, Dungeons & Dragons – Honor Among Thieves grossed $208.2 million globally against a budget of $150 million, which rendered it a Box Office disappointment.
This film draws inspiration from the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and is set within the Forgotten Realms campaign universe, distinct from the earlier film trilogy that spanned from 2000 to 2012. The production journey began in 2013, initially under Warner Bros. Pictures, after they triumphed over Hasbro and Universal Pictures in a legal battle for the film rights to the game.
The project later transitioned to Paramount Pictures, undergoing several changes in writers and directors. Ultimately, Goldstein and Daley emerged as the final creative team, incorporating elements from a previous version directed by Chris McKay and written by Michael Gilio. Filming commenced in April 2021, taking place in Iceland and subsequently in Northern Ireland.
Dungeons & Dragons – Honor Among Thieves premiered at the South by Southwest festival on March 10, 2023, and was released in the United States on March 31 by Paramount. Critics responded positively to the film, commending the cast’s performances, direction, visual effects, writing, musical score, humor, and overall tone.
