Boston Blue Squanders A Golden Chance To Reunite With Blue Bloods Veterans

One of the most thrilling elements of Boston Blue is the chance for Blue Bloods characters to make a comeback, yet the spinoff has already missed it’s prime opportunity to achieve this. The forthcoming CBS police drama centers on Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan as he begins a new phase in his life. Rather than tackling cases in New York, he will be delving into criminal investigations in Boston.

After the conclusion of the Blue Bloods series in December 2024, CBS immediately began exploring options to sustain its universe. This series was among the network’s most successful, after all. Several months later, Boston Blue emerged. While fans can continue to enjoy the Blue Bloods franchise, they will need to cope with the absence of several original characters.

The Spinoff Does Not Start With Danny’s Move

If you assumed that Boston Blue would start with Danny relocating from New York to Boston, you would be mistaken. Rather, the debut of the forthcoming CBS police procedural TV Series will commence with Wahlberg’s character already established in his new city.

As reported by TV Insider, the pilot synopsis for the Blue Bloods spinoff is detailed as follows : “NYPD detective Danny Reagan collaborates with Boston detective Lena Silver to probe a fatal fire at a technology firm. As their investigation unfolds, they reveal an intricate network of secrets linked to facial recognition technology, familial connections, and a quest for justice that unites the Silver and Reagan families.”

Boston Blue opens with Danny comfortably established in his new Boston residence, eager to return to his job. While it’s not officially verified, the synopsis of the pilot suggests that this episode will showcase Danny teaming up with Detective Lena Silver (portrayed by Sonequa Martin-Green) for the very first time.

Therefore, viewers can look forward to experiencing at least one new beginning in the spinoff. In addition to Wahlberg playing Danny and Martin-Green portraying Lena, the pilot episode will also unveil the other main characters of the series.

The cast of Boston Blue features Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, and Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan, who takes over the role from Andrew Terraciano, the original Sean from Blue Bloods.

Boston Blue Bypasses Danny’s Goodbyes With Frank & The Reagans In New York

Fortunately, Boston Blue won’t need to delve deeply into exposition in the pilot episode. According to the hour’s synopsis, audiences will be immersed in the show’s main narrative from the very beginning. While some setup is necessary, it will primarily focus on Danny’s new collaboration with Lena, rather than the details of his relocation to Boston.

Unfortunately, since Boston Blue begins with Danny already established in his new life, the premiere of the CBS TV show will not include Wahlberg’s character bidding farewell to his family in New York. He would have already said his goodbyes prior to embarking on this new adventure.

Consequently, viewers will miss the chance to see Tom Selleck and the rest of the cast in the first episode of the spinoff. This was an ideal chance for the Reagan family to appear in Boston Blue. It would have delighted fans and fit seamlessly into the narrative, as Danny needs to bid farewell to his father, siblings, and others before leaving New York. Unfortunately, the Blue Bloods spinoff will miss out on this opportunity.

The series will also showcase Sean, Danny’s son, relocating to Boston. Therefore, Wahlberg’s character from Boston Blue won’t be the sole character originating from Blue Bloods. Although the actor portraying Sean will be new, he will still infuse a sense of familiarity into the show, which will be lacking due to the absence of his other family members.

Bridget Moynahan’s Character Erin Has Been Officially Confirmed To Feature In Boston Blue

The exciting news is that a prominent member of the Reagan family will be making a comeback in the premiere of Boston Blue — Erin Reagan, portrayed by Bridget Moynahan. Nevertheless, her return should not be the sole cameo in the spinoff.

The series needs to include additional special guest stars, ideally featuring talents such as Tom Selleck, Will Estes, Len Cariou, or even Marisa Ramirez. Wahlberg’s association with Boston Blue and it’s link to Blue Bloods is sure to attract an audience.

Yet, the success of the new series in terms of ratings hinges on whether Wahlberg’s past co-stars return for the spinoff. While Boston Blue features Moynahan, it requires additional familiar faces. If Erin can make her way to Boston for unspecified reasons, surely the others can join her as well.

After all, Boston isn’t too distant from New York. The demand for Blue Bloods cameos has grown significantly, as the spin-off centers on family themes, similar to the original series. However, instead of the Reagans, the spotlight will be on the Silvers.

Danny remains the main character, but he has left his own family in New York. It’s possible that the Silvers will become a new family for him. Despite everything, Danny values his family greatly. Erin will be present to meet her brother’s new partner, along with their grandfather, stepmother, stepsister, and brother during the premiere.

It makes sense that Frank, Jamie, and the rest of the Reagans should attend too. However, only time will reveal which Reagans will make it to the gathering in Boston Blue. Boston Blue is set to debut on Friday, October 17, at 10 pm ET on CBS.
