Beantown’s Boston Blue is still anticipating the arrival of Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan. Although the flagship series has concluded, it’s influence continues into the 2025-2026 TV season with the spinoff sequel led by Donnie Wahlberg. However, instead of patrolling the streets of New York, Danny has relocated to Beantown. This significant change was prompted by Sean’s brush with death, which set the series’ events in motion.
Boston Blue has featured a few cameos from Blue Bloods, yet Selleck has not made an appearance yet. Unlike standard police dramas, Blue Bloods carved out it’s unique identity. During it’s remarkable 15 Seasons on CBS, the series centered around the Reagans — a family committed to serving the public in New York, all presented through a procedural narrative lens.
The show’s triumph was also attributed to it’s impressive cast, with Tom Selleck portraying the Reagan patriarch. Consequently, interest in seeing Frank again has surged since Blue Bloods ended it’s run in 2025.
Sonequa Martin-Green addressed the highly anticipated cameo by stating to Woman’s World that, just like other Blue Bloods fans, she is also looking forward to Selleck’s return as Danny’s legendary father. She confirmed that they have been “talking about Mr. Selleck for a long time,” hinting at their commitment to bringing him back for Boston Blue.
According to Sonequa Martin-Green, “Tom Selleck is frequently approached, and as Donnie often mentions, the door is always open. We would be thrilled to have him on board, and we will ensure that the narrative is perfectly crafted because Tom is very particular about the story, which is completely justified and something we all should prioritize. I believe it would be fantastic to have him involved, and I am eager to see what story unfolds if he decides to join us.”
Several members of the iconic Reagan family from New York have made their appearances in Boston Blue, including Erin, Henry, and Joe Hill. Additionally, the series consistently features Baez due to her connection with Danny — a relationship that the CBS spinoff sequel seems determined to maintain, even with the logistical challenges they are currently encountering.
It remains uncertain whether Boston Blue will sustain their romance throughout Season 2. The fantastic news is that, with Boston Blue performing strongly in the ratings, the likelihood of cancellation is virtually nonexistent at this moment. This provides the show with ample opportunity to feature Frank.
Contrary to speculation about his retirement in the Blue Bloods finale, Selleck’s character has retained his position and continues to serve as the Commissioner of the NYPD throughout the sequel’s storyline. He has been referenced numerous times.
If Henry can make the journey to visit Danny up North, there’s truly no reason for him not to visit, whether in Boston Blue Season 2 or in future seasons. It’s clear that Selleck’s character tops the list of desired appearances in Boston Blue, but any member of the Reagan family would be a fantastic addition to Beantown.
Imagine the joy of Danny and Sean spending time with them, along with interactions with the Silvers. Seeing Eddie and Jamie with their new child would be delightful, as well as the younger generation of the family.
Alternatively, Boston Blue could create an exciting episode featuring a collaboration between the New York and Boston police, making for a thrilling crossover event.
