As Boston Blue, the successful spinoff of CBS’ Blue Bloods, prepares for it’s second season this fall, it has certainly paved a promising path for the franchise. However, one cameo from the original series seems increasingly unlikely as time passes. After Blue Bloods concluded it’s run with 14 Seasons and nearly 300 episodes, fans found it challenging to envision how the franchise could evolve with Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan embarking on a new journey in Boston.
While Danny still has connections to the Reagans, Boston Blue introduces a fresh narrative with new characters joining the story. Although several familiar faces have made the transition from Blue Bloods to Boston Blue, such as Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, Will Hochman, and Will Estes, there is one cameo that fans of Blue Bloods are eagerly anticipating.
Even with multiple members of the Reagan family making appearances in the spinoff, Tom Selleck’s character, Frank Reagan, has not yet graced the new series. Given Frank’s pivotal role throughout the 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, he seemed like a perfect candidate for an early cameo in Boston Blue, yet it is evident that a reunion has not been scheduled or hinted at so far.
Following a season of Boston Blue that expanded the universe and enriched the Blue Bloods franchise, it seems unlikely that we will see a cameo from Frank Reagan. While Tom Selleck hasn’t completely dismissed the idea, the chances of his return are slim with Boston Blue Season 2 on the horizon.
Tom Selleck’s Remarks Regarding The cancellation of Blue Bloods Cast Doubt On The Possibility of A Boston Blue Cameo
Despite Selleck’s long-standing support for Blue Bloods, the show’s abrupt cancellation has clearly disappointed him, as he expressed during a recent episode of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name.
Tom Selleck stated, “Blue Bloods was a labor of love” that the entire cast was eager to continue. He disclosed that the cast had agreed to a 25% pay cut to help sustain the show, and the cancellation by CBS was “very frustrating” since it had nothing to do with the show’s ratings, which were not a problem at all.
Although Selleck has been one of the most desired actors for a cameo in Boston Blue, his sentiments regarding the cancellation of Blue Bloods might prevent him from returning to his role.
The decision by CBS to cancel Blue Bloods seems to have caught the actors off guard, and with Selleck expressing that it felt as if the rug was pulled out from under the show, the network’s swift move to create Boston Blue could be a source of frustration for the iconic actor.
Rather than making a comeback to the franchise, it appears that Selleck’s character, Frank, may remain permanently off-screen.
Boston Blue Just Won’t Be The Same Without A Cameo From Frank Reagan
Although Selleck could potentially reprise his role as the Reagan family patriarch on Boston Blue in the future, it appears he is not quite ready to return just yet.
With the considerable frustration Selleck has shown about the decision to cancel Blue Bloods while it was still thriving in the ratings and the cast’s desire to keep the project alive, it might be too tough for him to revisit that character.
Furthermore, Selleck may wish to avoid suggesting that he is comfortable with the cancellation of Blue Bloods by maintaining his position. Regrettably, this places Boston Blue in a challenging position. Similar to Blue Bloods, which centers around family dynamics, Boston Blue has reintroduced several members of the Reagan family as it’s inaugural season progressed.
However, the character that viewers are most eager to see is Selleck’s Frank, which poses a significant problem for the series. Until Frank makes an appearance on Boston Blue, the connection between Blue Bloods and it’s spinoff will seem weaker than it ought to be. Without Selleck’s Frank passing the torch to Wahlberg’s Danny, Boston Blue will perpetually have something to prove.
