One member of the Reagan family remains troubled by the cancellation of Blue Bloods. For it’s dedicated fans, the CBS procedural transcended the typical cop drama. Over it’s impressive 15-season journey, the Reagans—a family of public servants in New York—were central to the narrative, making it feel more like a family show than a standard procedural.
Blue Bloods boasted a remarkable cast, led by Tom Selleck in the role of Frank, the Reagan patriarch. The affection among the characters mirrored their off-screen camaraderie, as the ensemble truly enjoyed being part of the project.
Shortly after Blue Bloods concluded it’s original run, it’s legacy carried on into the 2025-2026 TV season with the spinoff sequel, Boston Blue, featuring Donnie Wahlberg. Rather than patrolling the streets of New York, Danny relocated to Boston to team up with his son, Sean, who is embarking on his career there.
The spinoff performed admirably in it’s first year, making it easy for CBS to greenlight a second season. However, despite it’s success, the way Blue Bloods wrapped up remains a painful topic for one of it’s cherished cast members.
Tom Selleck reminisced about shooting the last dinner scene of Blue Bloods, expressing how reluctant everyone was to see the show come to a close. By that time, they had already accepted a significant pay reduction to keep the series alive, driven by their passion for working together. Despite their efforts, CBS remained firm and proceeded with the cancellation.
According to Tom Selleck, “The making of Blue Bloods was a heartfelt endeavor for all. In fact, during our last family dinner in the final year of the series, it was clear that everyone was eager to come back. We had already agreed to a 25 percent reduction in our salaries and had taken various steps to keep the show alive. It was incredibly frustrating because among the Top 100 shows on broadcast television, Blue Bloods ranked 6th in our 15th year. No one wanted to depart. Everyone was committed to staying on. That’s a rare achievement. It might even be a record to maintain the same cast for such an extended period. Typically, if it weren’t a family dynamic, it would be easier, but you simply can’t replace Jamie or Danny or any of the others with a different actor. Many may not understand, but numerous shows turn into a nightmare to be part of. There are plenty of egos involved, with attitudes like ‘I won’t leave my dressing room until he does’ and it creates a miserable environment. However, Blue Bloods was never like that.”
Blue Bloods concluded it’s impressive 15-year journey with a significant episode, yet, unlike many series finales, it maintained much of the show’s established dynamics. The finale ended on a joyful note, revealing that Jamie and Eddie are expecting their first child during the final Reagan family dinner scene.
Contrary to widespread speculation, Frank did not retire. He continues to serve as the NYPD Commissioner in the storyline of Boston Blue. While it’s unclear if this will change soon, it certainly paves the way for his increased participation in the spin-off, despite his absence so far.
In contrast to rapidly approved spinoffs like S.W.A.T. Exiles, there appears to be widespread enthusiasm for Donnie Wahlberg to carry on the Blue Bloods legacy through his own series. So far, several characters from Blue Bloods have made appearances with him up north, including Erin, Joe Hill, Henry, and of course, Maria Baez. The team behind Boston Blue has expressed a desire to incorporate Selleck’s Frank, but it hasn’t materialized yet. Perhaps season 2 will finally make that happen.
One can certainly understand Selleck’s sentiments about the end of Blue Bloods. He highlighted various reasons that might have persuaded CBS to keep the series running, including the cast’s readiness to take substantial pay cuts.
Regrettably for him, the network concluded that the flagship show was not financially viable enough to remain part of their lineup. They have now introduced a new program, Boston Blue.
