Biosphere is a science fiction comedy film from 2023, directed by Mel Eslyn in her first feature-length directorial role, with a screenplay co-written by Eslyn and Mark Duplass. The film features performances by Sterling K. Brown and Duplass. Eslyn collaborated with Zackary Drucker, Maddie Buis, and Shuli Harel, while Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass served as executive producers. Biosphere is a disaster at domestic Box Office.
In the aftermath of a worldwide apocalypse that has wiped out nearly all of humanity, the sole survivors are childhood friends Billy, who once served as the President of the United States, and Ray, a scientist who was Billy’s trusted adviser.
While a despondent Billy grapples with feelings of guilt for the apocalypse, Ray maintains an optimistic outlook, highlighting the significance of hope.
He frequently recalls the tale of his eighth birthday celebration, where a magician sketched a bowling ball on a piece of paper and magically produced a real one that landed with a resounding thud on the floor, a trick that continues to baffle Ray.
It made it’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and was subsequently released on July 7, 2023. In November 2022, IFC Films acquired the North American distribution rights for the film.
