Ben Hardy Reveals 8 Fascinating Insights About The Conjuring – Last Rites Experience

One genre that he has yet to master is horror — but that changes now. Actor Ben Hardy stars alongside Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, and Mia Tomlinson in the concluding chapter of The Conjuring Universe, aptly named The Conjuring – Last Rites.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are compelled to tackle one final case in Michael Chaves’ film. Hardy portrays Tony, the new boyfriend of Tomlinson’s Judy Warren, who is hesitant to reveal to her parents just how deep her ties to the supernatural realm truly are.

In a recent media interview actor Ben Hardy shares some interesting facts relating to The Conjuring Universe.

Ben Hardy Reveals 8 Fascinating Insights About The Conjuring – Last Rites Experience

1) When Ben Hardy watched the first film, The Conjuring, back in 2013 ?

Ben Hardy : I saw it in the theater. I believe it was in 2013. I would have been around 21 or 22, just graduated from drama school. I guess I’m starting to appreciate it more now, although I’ve never really been a big fan of horror, you know? Yet, that’s one film I chose to see. And I genuinely believe that [The Conjuring] series is something remarkable. The fact that it’s “based on a true story” within the horror genre is absolutely wild. It adds an extra layer of creepiness and unease.

2) Ben Hardy has long desired to immerse himself in the horror genre, or could it be that this is merely a fortunate coincidence ?

Ben Hardy : It’s definitely the latter. What I’ve come to appreciate about horror is the immersive cinematic experience it offers. There’s something truly special about being in a theater. I’m not just saying this because a new film is about to be released; attending a horror movie in a cinema is genuinely a shared experience.

You don’t even need to be with others — you can go alone and still find yourself gasping collectively during those jump scares. I guess I’m a big advocate for community. Watching a horror film really fosters that sense of togetherness.

As a viewer, my connection with entertainment has always been about finding something that can truly transport me and provide an escape. That’s my ultimate goal. I seek relaxation, and horror simply doesn’t offer that for me. It creates a different kind of viewing experience.

However, when this opportunity arose, I realized that if I were to venture into the horror genre, this franchise would be the perfect choice. I have a genuine appreciation for Blumhouse Productions films as well. I enjoy exploring new avenues, as I tend to get bored quite quickly. Therefore, the prospect of diving into a different genre was thrilling.

3) Were there no moments during the filming of The Conjuring – Last Rites that Ben Hardy found to be frightening ?

Ben Hardy : The frightening moments on a horror film set aren’t found during the actual filming. They occur when you’re unexpectedly surprised, like when you spot [characters in costume] outside of [their] trailer. That definitely gave me a jolt.

As for the filming itself, the most you might experience is a slight scare during the first take, which can spark your imagination, but beyond that, it’s just part of the job. Occasionally, I find myself watching [scenes] I wasn’t involved in, and I think, “Wow, that’s surreal. That’s going to resonate with audiences.”

However, it’s incredibly challenging [to predict]. This is likely what studios grapple with when producing horror films, trying to determine what will truly elicit fear. Yet, when you read the script, you might think, “Wow, that’s eerie, that’s bound to be frightening.” The initial reading of the script is probably the most enlightening experience of all.

4) The Character Tony Is Access Point

Ben Hardy : For those who have yet to experience a Conjuring film, I would suggest he serves as your entry point, as he too has never watched a Conjuring movie, you see? He is unfamiliar with the Warrens. He has developed feelings for Judy Warren.

Although they have tackled countless cases, to him, it’s all new knowledge. Thus, from a narrative standpoint, that’s his role, I suppose. However, for enthusiasts of The Conjuring universe, I prefer to view him as a refreshing presence. I hope he provides moments of relief amidst the frights. I like to envision him as the golden retriever of the film.

5) Ben Hardy Initially had a negative reaction to the script when he first read it

Ben Hardy : Upon my initial reading of the script, I thought, “Is that a direction we’re taking?” It seems the director may not have intended to follow that path, yet introducing an additional layer of suspicion in a horror film is always a positive move. However, I don’t believe I was aiming for that… I understand your point, as he is indeed posing many questions.

6) Will Ben Hardy enjoy watching Patrick and Vera in action ?

Ben Hardy : It was a mix of excitement and intimidation. This is their franchise, and as you step into it, you naturally want to leave a positive impression, especially since they are understandably protective of it. However, to be honest, they were incredibly welcoming from the very beginning. They were there to support rather than to judge, you know?

I spent more time with Patrick, perhaps because I had more scenes with him, but both actors were exceptionally generous and very open with their franchise. I truly cannot praise them enough, and I believe they are both outstanding.

7) Chemistry With Mia Tomlinson

Ben Hardy : I had a great time doing one; it’s been a while since I attempted an American accent. This time, I began to maintain accents while filming, which might come off as a bit pretentious, but it’s extremely beneficial. It’s not about following a method; rather, the American accent demands more effort from the mouth.

British accents tend to be a bit more relaxed. The American R’s are definitely more challenging for us, so staying in character helps keep those muscles engaged and reduces self-consciousness.

When it comes to building chemistry… I truly value my many American friends, but I’ve noticed that when you first meet someone in America and they happen to be British, there’s often a natural pull towards them due to shared cultural similarities.

It’s a comfortable choice. And Mia is fantastic. She shines in the film. She’s impressive, incredibly dedicated, and she truly earned her role, delivering an outstanding performance.

8) Is Ben Hardy set to make a return to the horror genre once more ?

Ben Hardy : I am definitely open to it. However, let’s take a moment to consider…
