Blue Bloods has concluded, yet the influence of Tom Selleck on the show remains significant. Abigail Hawk, a cast member, shared how the Magnum, P.I. star transformed her life in multiple ways, beginning with the name of her character.
Abigail, took to the airwaves on Spectrum News this New Year’s Eve, broadcasting live from the vibrant Times Square in Manhattan. In an engaging interview, she shared insights on the profound influence the CBS series has had on her career, especially in the lead-up to the highly anticipated series finale that aired on December 13.
Abigail, who portrayed Detective Abigail Baker for an impressive 14 seasons, shared her thoughts on the incredible journey she’s experienced since the show began.
According to Abigail Hawk, “So much has transpired. I truly evolved into the person I am today. It still feels somewhat surreal, but now I’m fully embracing the gratitude for everything that has unfolded. It happened, and it was nothing short of amazing. This chapter in my life is truly beautiful, and I can’t wait to discover what unfolds next. I find Detective Baker to be the ideal role model that every woman aspires to be, which makes her even more impressive than I could ever be.”
Abigail truly stood out as “so cool” and pointed out that Tom “altered the character’s name to align” with her actual name.
Abigail nodded in agreement. She said, “Absolutely, he did. And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with the name Melissa. I’ve faced my share of criticism for this, but he simply adored the name Abigail. So, a big thank you to Mom and Dad for that!”
Numerous fans of Blue Bloods have highlighted on social media that Tom’s character, Frank Reagan, mistakenly referred to Abigail as Melissa in some episodes from the first season. This intriguing detail was addressed by Abigail in a January 2021 interview with Starry Mag, where she confirmed that the name change was made at Tom’s request.
The Chicago native was invited to share her memories of how the character was originally portrayed to her when she first joined the cast of the show.
Abigail explained, “At first, she was devoid of a last name, age or gender. She was simply a blank slate. She could be referred to as Detective Mel or Melissa, but there was no first name to claim. Certainly not mine. I landed the role, and just two or three episodes in, Tom made the decision to switch it to Abigail, believing that Melissa was too ordinary. I suppose that’s a compliment, so I’ll accept it. He then consulted with the lawyers about the last name Baker. Clearly thinking it was essential for me to have a surname as a character on the show. Thanks to him, I was given a complete identity, and that was entirely his doing.”
In the series finale, Abigail teamed up with Frank to tackle one last investigation involving a gang terrorizing New York City. Ultimately, the Reagan family succeeded in identifying the perpetrator and gathered for a heartfelt final dinner around their beloved family table.
