A Thousand and One is a 2023 American drama film that marks the feature directorial debut of A. V. Rockwell, who both wrote and directed the film. Following it’s theatrical release on March 31, 2023, by Focus Features, A Thousand and One garnered critical acclaim and achieved a Box Office gross of around $3.5 million.
Set against the backdrop of the 1990s and 2000s, the story revolves around a single mother who makes the bold decision to kidnap her son from the foster care system in order to raise him herself, as they navigate life in a rapidly evolving New York City.
The film had it’s premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival on January 22, where it won the prestigious Grand Jury Prize. Additionally, it was recognized as one of the top ten independent films of 2023 by the National Board of Review.
