The Minecraft Movie is taking the Box Office by storm. This latest film, inspired by the beloved video game, is helmed by director Jared Hess, known for his work on Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. It features a diverse cast, including Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hanse, who portray an unlikely team trapped in the Overworld.
They are led by the eccentric crafter Steve, voiced by Jack Black. As the first major release of April, the Minecraft Movie has already set a record for the highest number of pre-sale tickets for a PG-rated film in 2025.
A Minecraft Movie grossed with a domestic Box Office total of $200 million over the first week. This impressive figure positions it at the top of the domestic charts and represents the highest opening week of the year 2025 to date, as well as the first film to surpass the $200 million mark. In comparison, the second-place film, Captain America : Brave New World, which premiered in February, earned $113 million.
It has also outperformed The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, achieving the highest opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation with $163 million. Super Mario initially debuted with $146.4 million (weekend falls on 3rd day to 5th day at Box Office) and swiftly climbed to an astonishing $1.361 billion, securing its position as the highest-grossing video game film globally.
The only other recent release to break into the Top 5 is The Chosen : Last Supper – Part 2 with $10 million, presented by Fathom Events. This film showcases a fresh set of episodes from the faith-driven television series on the big screen. Just last weekend, Last Supper – Part 1 premiered, earning an impressive $11.5 million over its opening three days, marking it as the most successful installment in the franchise so far.
Significant shifts have occurred throughout the chart, as the Jason Statham action film A Working Man dropped two position and the Blumhouse horror flick The Woman in the Yard dropped one position during their second weeks.
Meanwhile, Disney’s live-action adaptation of Snow White plummeted from No. 2 to No. 4, experiencing a steep decline of about 58% in its third week. This rapid downturn raises concerns that it may struggle to surpass the $100 million mark in domestic earnings by the conclusion of its theatrical run.
With two fresh releases now occupying spots in the Top 5, two previously ranked titles have completely exited the chart. One of these is The Last Supper – Part 1, which fell from No. 3 to No. 6, earning $2.86 million and experiencing an 82% decline—an expected outcome given that its sequel is currently in theaters.
On the other hand, A24’s Death of a Unicorn has slipped from No. 5 to No. 7, bringing in $2.69 million with a 53% decrease, a typical week-to-week drop for a horror film.

The impressive Box Office performance of the film is underscored by the strong support it has received from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics have assigned the A Minecraft Movie a disappointing score of 48%, its audience score, known as the Popcornmeter, stands at an impressive 87%, based on over 1,000 verified user ratings.
This places it a mere 3% shy of achieving the Verified Hot status, a milestone it is likely to reach as more reviews come in during its theatrical release. This positive reception significantly helps offset the film’s production costs.
The budget for A Minecraft Movie stands at an impressive $150 million. Generally, films are expected to recoup about two and a half times their production costs at the Box Office, which suggests that this video game adaptation needs to generate approximately $375 million or more to break even.
However, the fact that it has already recouped its budget in the domestic market is a promising indicator of its potential profitability. If it maintains a trajectory similar to that of Super Mario Bros., it could potentially surpass $1 billion by the conclusion of its theatrical release.
While 2025 began with a series of promising mid-level successes, the market experienced a significant downturn in late February and March. Fortunately, the release of A Minecraft Movie has revitalized the Box Office, delivering the first $100 million weekend and $200 million week of the year for theaters respectively.
